Struggling with bad breath? If you have dentures, then it could be the result of an unpleasant odor lingering on your prosthetic. Don’t worry – there is a solution. In fact, there are a few! To find out why your dentures might smell bad and 4 ways you can fix the problem for the long haul, read on.

Why Do Dentures Smell Bad?

Most often, dentures smell bad for the same reason those without a prosthetic sometimes develop bad breath: food particles and bacteria. When left to accumulate on or around your dentures, these substances can produce an unpleasant smell.

4 Ways to Fix Denture Breath

Here are some measures you can take that can keep your dentures and smile fresh:

1. Clean Your Mouth and Dentures Daily

Maintaining a good oral hygiene routine is essential to your dental health, regardless of whether or not you have natural teeth. In addition, you should thoroughly brush your dentures every night when you take them off. While they’re removed, clean your mouth and gently brush your gums, tongue, and the inside of your cheeks.

Ask your dentist for denture cleaning product recommendations. A general rule of thumb is to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive denture cleanser daily. You should also soak your prosthetic overnight either in a glass of water or a cleaning solution. Removing the odor-causing particles and deep-cleaning your dentures help maintain their neutral smell.

2. Avoid Dry Mouth

Saliva rinses away bacteria and food particles that cause bad breath. A dry mouth allows them to multiply and thrive. Keeping your mouth moist combats the odor-causing substances that flourish in that environment.

Make sure to stay hydrated. Other ways to stimulate saliva production include choosing alcohol-free mouthwash and having coffee and alcohol in moderation.

3. Quit Bad Habits

If you smoke, chew tobacco, or use e-cigarettes, you’re at risk of developing bad breath and denture odors. Your prosthetic might have pores that the smell of smoke can attach to.

Kicking your bad habits, or at the very least cutting back on them, can reduce your denture breath.

4. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

If you’ve tried all of the above and are still struggling with denture breath, you should visit your dentist. The smell could be caused by other underlying reasons, such as gum disease, cavities, and more. At your appointment, your dental team can learn more about your concerns, determine the root of the problem, and put a plan in place to restore your minty-fresh breath!
