Why Your Clear Aligners Are Turning Yellow & How to Brighten Them Up
October 12, 2025

One of the biggest perks of clear aligners is their subtle appearance—you can straighten your teeth without anyone noticing. But that invisible look can fade quickly if your trays start to turn yellow. If you’ve noticed your aligners looking less than crystal-clear, you’re not alone. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help you prevent discoloration and keep your smile transformation on track.
Why Clear Aligners Turn Yellow
Even though aligners are made from durable, high-quality plastic, they’re not immune to staining. The most common reason for discoloration is exposure to foods and beverages that leave behind pigment. Coffee, tea, red wine, and even certain sauces can all cause aligners to take on a yellow tint—especially if you forget to remove them before eating or drinking.
Tobacco use is another major culprit. The tar and nicotine in cigarettes can quickly stain aligners, giving them a dull or yellowish appearance that’s hard to reverse.
Lastly, improper cleaning habits can also play a role. Using toothpaste or colored soaps to clean your trays can cause surface scratching and leave behind residue that traps stains.
How to Prevent Stains Before They Start
The best way to avoid yellowing is to maintain a consistent cleaning routine. Rinse your aligners every time you remove them, and gently brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, unscented soap. Avoid using toothpaste—it’s too abrasive and can cloud the plastic.
Make it a habit to only drink water when your aligners are in. Any other beverage, no matter how light in color, can lead to buildup and staining over time. When you remove your aligners to eat or drink, store them in their case to protect them from exposure to air and bacteria.
Also, remember to brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in. Trapping food particles between your teeth and trays not only leads to discoloration but can also cause bad breath and plaque buildup.
What to Do If They’ve Already Yellowed
If your aligners have already started to look discolored, don’t panic—it’s possible to improve their appearance. Start by soaking them in an aligner cleaning solution or a mix of equal parts water and white vinegar for about 15–20 minutes. Rinse them thoroughly afterward to remove any lingering taste.
If you’re using Invisalign or a similar brand, your dentist may also offer professional cleaning crystals or specialized cleaners designed to restore clarity without damaging the material. Always follow your dentist’s instructions and avoid trying harsh home remedies, as these can cause warping or scratching.
In some cases, if the staining is severe or the trays are nearing the end of their wear period, it may be best to move on to your next set a little early—but only after consulting your dentist or orthodontist.
Keep Your Smile—and Your Aligners—Bright
With proper care and consistency, your clear aligners can stay as invisible as the day you got them. Think of it as part of your daily oral hygiene routine—simple habits that protect your investment and keep your smile journey on track.
